Antiochus VII Euergetes Sidetes Silver Tetradrachm // Seleucid Kingdom Ca. 138 to 129 BCE
Product Description
This is a Tetradrachm of Antiochus VII Euergetes, who reigned the Greek Hellenistic Seleucid Empire from 138-129 B.C.
The obverse portrays his diademed head right. Note the absence of wear on the high points. The reverse depicts Athena standing left, holding a small figure of Nike in her right hand with wreaths surrounding the scene. Her left hand holds a scepter and rests on a shield, upon which can be seen a human face. Again, no wear is evident.
David Sear wrote that Sidetes, "almost alone amongst the later Seleucid monarchs... ruled with competency and integrity." He was killed in battle against the Parthians. He was the last Seleucid king of any stature.
