It has been said that a riverboat pilot gave young Sam Clemens his pen name "mark twain", from the helmsman's cry for a measured river depth of two fathoms  – safe water for a steamboat. Literary historians have argued, however, that according to a Virginia City legend a "mark twain" actually stood for two shots of whisky for Clemens, and two chalk marks against his tab at the saloon.
