Description
SALLY RIDE'S PERSONALLY OWNED "FIRST MAN ON THE MOON" STAMP BLOCK, EX: SMITHSONIAN
First American Woman in space DR. SALLY K. RIDE personally owned "First Man On The Moon" United States postage 10 cent air mail stamp block of four honoring the historic achievement, from her collection originally exhibited at the Smithsonian Postal Museum. It simply doesn't get more All-American than a stamp block commemorating America's first moon landing from the collection of America's first female space hero.
Ride was an avid philatelist and topical stamp collector, combining her passion for space and sports, a hobby she continued throughout her adult life. Her collection included stamps commemorating her own achievements. The United States posthumously issued a stamp with her portrait on it in 2018.
Originally issued September 10, 1969, the stamp celebrating the historic moon landing was made from the same master die that the astronauts took with them to the moon. Additionally, it's only fitting that it was the largest stamp ever issued by the United States up to that point, in keeping with man's highest achievement.
Ride later flew aboard the space shuttle Challenger as a crew member on her own historic, six-day STS-7 mission as America's first female astronaut. Ride would go on to become the first American woman to fly twice, with a lifetime total of more than 343 hours spent in space. A two-time Challenger space shuttle astronaut, she would go on to serve on the Rogers Commission, the presidential commission investigating the Challenger disaster. Ride died of pancreatic cancer in 2012.
The Sally Ride "First Man On The Moon" stamp block is accompanied by a COPY of the COA from Mark Roesler, Chairman & CEO of CMG Worldwide, the Official Intellectual Property and Licensing Representative of the Sally Ride Estate certifying that this block of stamps (and other stamp-related ephemera) came from Sally's personal collection.
NOTE: This auction is only for the single "First Man On The Moon" stamp block, as shown. Any other items are shown for reference only.
Ride, the youngest American astronaut to have flown in space at just 32, was the first American woman in space, and only the third internationally after cosmonauts Valentina Tereshkova and 1963 and Svetlana Savitskaya in 1982.
Condition is as shown. One of the very few personally-owned Ride items to ever come to market.
Sold as is, as shown.
