Description
Inspired by Katsushika Hokusai's print "Umezawa zu" (1830-1833) from his series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. Umezawa was a post station between Oiso-juku and Odawara-juku on the Tokaido road, known for its tea houses and rest areas. It was named for its abundant plum trees. The "zu" or "sa" in Umezawa-zu may have been a misreading of "no" or "sho", and is thought to refer to the Umezawa area in Ninomiya-cho, Kanagawa prefecture. The predominantly blue image shows wisps of red seeping through the swirling clouds at either end, seeming to depict the moment just before sunrise. There are no people, buildings, or the landmark "plum trees" in the print. The cranes are the main focus - drinking water, preening their feathers, or flying gracefully, all completely at ease.
